Making someone laugh is one of the most difficult tasks, now imagine standing on a stage with hundreds of people watching you, and expecting you to make them laugh. Sounds terrifying, doesn’t it?

The advent of social media has turned out to be a boon for all creators. Standup comedians have gained a lot of popularity from it. Standup comedians like Bassi, Upmanyu, Rahul Subramanian, and many more, are breaking down the typical mindset of a 9 to 5 job.

With youtube gaining more and more popularity, a whole new generation of standup comedians in India has emerged. Every comedian is funny in his/her own way. We have curated a list of the standup comedians we loved and could relate to the most.

1. Abhishek Upmanyu- 

We know him from the Delhi, Mumbai, and rich people videos. When one talks of relatability in standup videos, Abhishek Upamanyu is the one whose name pops into your head.

He is a Delhite but, is currently based in Mumbai to pursue standup comedy. The most common topics of his joke revolve around breakups, respecting elders, discrimination, and Indian comebacks and insults. He is a chemical engineer by profession and has worked as a research analyst before joining AIB as a writer.

2. Anubhav Singh Bassi –

If you love standup comedy, it’s impossible that you haven’t heard of Bassi. He has gained around 4 million subscribers by uploading only 4 videos. The power of content is real, people.

He has gained a massive following by uploading just 4 videos on youtube. His most famous piece is a video called “Cheating”. He is a qualified lawyer by profession and he was once a UPSC aspirant. Also tried the food business before getting into standup comedy. He is hands down one of the best Indian standup comedians of our time.

3. Zakir Khan –

Zakir Khan (The Sakht Launda) is a poet, writer, and also one of the best standup comedians in India. He enjoys a huge following and he just keeps winning hearts every time, he is on the stage. He is an excellent standup comedian and also an incredible poet.

His poems never fail to melt your heart and his jokes never fail to entertain you. His journey from a middle-class boy to one of the most renowned artists in India is really praiseworthy.

4. Vipul Goyal –

He is considered to be one of the best standup comedians in India. He is known for his intellectual jokes on common everyday problems faced by Indians.

His video on “Modiji and Taxes” is one of the most-watched videos and is really entertaining. He is the only standup comedian to have a dedicated show – Humorously Yours – a semi-autobiographical show produced by TVF. He pursued his degree in electrical engineering from IIT Bombay before transitioning into a full-time standup comedian.

5. Akash Gupta –

His topics of jokes revolve around Delhi metros, dogs, and well, Delhi in general.  Talk about being a true Delhite. He is considered the most talented and youngest comedian working in the industry today.

Akash is the winner of the second season of Comicstaan and in no time he became a sensational comedy artist and one of the best standup comedians. He is a 27-year-old standup comedian who graduated from Delhi University where Akash had developed an interest in theatre and participated in a lot of plays.

6. Karunesh Talwar –

One of the best and most hilarious standup comedians of all time. His videos on “Bollywood”, “Parents”, “Nakli Hip Hop” were some of the most popular and most watched videos of all time.

You can never stop giggling whenever you are watching his videos and that’s a guarantee from us. Karunesh is known for his deep and contemptuous jokes that go against the accepted norms of society.

He is also an active participant in various open mic competitions and has also spent a few years as a scriptwriter for the AIB Group. Karunesh transitioned to a freelance comedian later.

7. Tanmay Bhatt –

Tanmay Bhatt needs no introduction in India. He gained immense popularity from AIB and his own youtube channel. We all loved watching him on screen with his witty and funny banters.

If you think, his roasts are the best, you should watch his reaction videos. His reactions on the tik-tok videos are the best. You should definitely watch them if you need a good dose of laughter.

8. Vir Das –

One of the most popular, earliest, and controversial (oops!) standup comedians of all time. He has appeared in various movies, Tv shows, and has also written comedy columns for several publications like Femina, Maxim, and Tehelka.

His latest piece “Two – Indias” was a huge hit and miss among the Indians. A lot of Indians absolutely adored and agreed with his video, while on the other hand, some people found it a bit demeaning.
